How to Dispose of Old Paint

Latex paint can be safely disposed of in the trash once it’s solidified. To make it a solid, take a half can of paint or less &

• Remove the paint lid & allow the paint to dry & ventilated area 

• OR add kitty litter to the paint can, stir the mixture together & allow it to harden. 

• Once hardened, you can place it in the trash. 

Remember this is only for latex paint. Oil based paint must be properly disposed of at an Erie County household hazardous waste collection.

In 2020, Erie County DEP will continue providing collection events throughout the County. In addition to periodic collection events around the county, DEP is introducing a new option for residents seeking to dispose of household hazardous waste: a new HHW Voucher Program that will enable residents to schedule a drop-off up to 50 lbs. of household hazardous waste at no charge to a hazardous waste facility in Tonawanda.

Where to Donate Paint to Do the Most Good

Your used paint can be useful again to families or charities who need a helping hand. A fresh coat of paint doesn’t just create a pleasant atmosphere—it helps protect surfaces from rust, mold & other potential hazards. So instead of getting rid of it, donate your old paint to organizations such as:

• Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Paint will be sold at low rates, so even those on a tight budget can do some sprucing up.

• Global Paint for Charity. This nonprofit collects used paints & distributes them to struggling homes, schools, hospitals & other organizations around the world.

• Homeless or Domestic Violence Shelters. Shelters are nearly always strapped for resources and most could make good use of your donated paint.

• Drama Clubs. Most amateur theater groups operate on a shoestring budget & would be thrilled to get a little free set dressing.

• Children’s Charities. Many nonprofits that work with children would be happy to use your old paint for craft projects.

• Scout Troops. Scout troops often buy materials for community service projects out of their own pockets. Your donated paint could help their budget go further.

Order Test for Your Well or Septic System

Before a property can be transferred, the well &/septic system must be tested.

*If the property is vacant or if there is snow on the ground, the septic system cannot be tested. At closing, an escrow will be set up to cover the cost of a new system in the event the septic system fails when tested after closing.

How do I find out the location and age of my septic system? The ECDOH keeps records indicating the location & age of many private sewage disposal systems. The homeowner of the property may call (716) 961-6800 to obtain a copy of the record if one is available.
